Say no, and stick to it.
Sweat. Working out is technically an addiction for me (according to some lame article I read), and I guess I do have to be careful with it since I have a history of an eating disorder (who doesn’t?). But there is no depression buster as effective for me than exercise. An aerobic workout not only provides an antidepressant effect, but you look pretty stupid lighting up after a run (trust me, I used to do it all the time and the stares weren’t friendly) or pounding a few beers before the gym. I don’t know if it’s the endorphins or what, but I just think–even pray–much better and feel better with sweat dripping down my face.
In short, enabling may increase an addict’s risk of overdose and death. It can also cause addiction to progress at an inorganic rate, making funds acquired from family and friends inadequate to support the habit. Once this occurs, opiate addicts often turn to theft as a way to feed addiction.
Set and Work Toward Goals – People who set realistic goals and actively work toward them are less likely to get sidetracked by drugs or alcohol than people who feel they are not achieving their goals or don’t have anything to work toward.
Be sure to focus on hopeful and positive outcomes. When we think that things will be better as a result of our actions, we are steering our actions toward that eventual outcome. In line with this, we should be sure to focus on the positive aspects of us achieving our short- and long-term goals. This also means taking inventory of our good traits, our skills that have served us well to-date, especially those that have helped us overcome certain difficult challenges. Think, too, about all the good things in our lives, our family and loved ones, our sponsor and fellow group members in the rooms. Life is actually pretty good, if we think about where we are today relative to where we once were in addiction.
How you feel does not make you a failure. We all have our ups and downs, our good and not-so-good days. Some days in recovery will find us feeling low, depressed, unfulfilled, stagnant, or uncertain, fearful and stressed. There will be multiple points throughout the process where you will be tempted to have a drink. It’s helpful to think of your craving as a wave. It starts slowly, builds, peaks, then crashes and dissipates. The point is that eventually your craving will go away – the wave will crash. Instead of trying to fight the craving, picture yourself riding it out like you would a surfboard. Also, don’t get caught off guard in thinking that since one craving stopped, another one won’t come quickly. Often, cravings can come quickly and in succession of each other. Don’t ride one wave successfully only to get knocked down by the next one a few minutes later.
Keep an open mind. Be open to learning more about yourself and what caused you to need rehab. Remaining open to the suggestions of people who are there to help will increase your ability to see things differently, see yourself honestly and make new choices that will improve your life.
