I am often shocked at the rate of behavioral relapse in family and friends of opiate addicts. Overcome denial. There are many addiction signs and symptoms, but you only have to be aware of one – and that is – you growing tolerance for substances or problem activities. If you get pass denial and embrace the fact the you have become dependent upon these activities, you will be amazed how easily you can think solutions to your problem.

Surround yourself with positive people. Think how badly you feel when you’re in the presence of someone who’s constantly harping about how awful things are, or who always puts down others’ efforts or ideas. Now think about how much better you feel when you’re with people who are excited and enthusiastic about life, tackling challenges and turning them into opportunities, sharing what techniques and tips they’ve had success with, and, in general, are caring, supportive and encouraging. While we can’t choose our families and some of our friends and acquaintances may not exactly fall into the category of positive people, we can choose to make new friends and spend time with people who are more upbeat and optimistic about life. By surrounding ourselves with positive people, we are lifted and encouraged by their example and their contagious good-will. Like-minded people make us feel better because we share goals and ideas. Write yourself a letter. Before you decide to go through your alcohol withdrawal, it’s a good idea to write yourself a letter and keep it nearby for quick reference. The content of the letter should be encouraging and it should remind you why you are going through the pain of detox in the first place. When you are feeling tempted, pull the letter out and read it to yourself. It’s even helpful to read it out loud as this has been shown to help you retain the information more effectively. Read it as many times as you need during the process.

For me personally, enabling means not doing anything for my son that he is capable of doing for himself. There can be a lot of gray area here; it changes from day to day. Explore the concept of enabling by listening to others in meetings or reading about it on blogs. What does enabling mean in your situation? How can you support him/her without making it “easy” for them to continue using. Addicts need to remember that they are capable human beings when given the opportunity. If we do everything for them, we rob them of feeling good about themselves. Most likely their sense of self worth has taken a big hit with all they’ve been through so allowing them to pick up the pieces on their own as much as possible will show them they can succeed.

Learn to be honest. Dishonesty is a natural manifestation of addiction. In almost every case, the addiction cannot be sustained without dishonesty. Begin with yourself and with the people around you, in this space for growth, to let go of the need to lie, manipulate or deceive. Healing begins from a place of honesty.
