Take care of yourself. There are many things that can trigger a craving. Being hungry, angry, lonely or tired can induce a craving that you might not be expecting. Taking care of your body and soul will help preempt risks. Eating right, getting enough sleep and keeping a list of clean, trusted friends can help you take care of yourself.

Accept The Urge – Rather than fight the intense craving to drink or use drugs, accept the urge and ride it out. This overwhelming feeling to drink won’t kill you and given enough time, it will subside. Many urges will disappear in 10 to 15 minutes. If they do not, remove yourself from the situation you’re in which could possibly be triggering your urges. In the past, you may have had a drink to cover up emotional or physical discomforts but now is the time to work through them and understand that discomforts in life are inevitable and are perfectly okay.

After working with families and close friends of opiate addicts in the most difficult stage of addiction (4th stage), I’ve noticed one primary characteristic present: negative enabling. Consistent exposure to active addiction has the potential to make the most stable person somewhat neurotic. Often, I see family and friends desperately trying to “sober up” the active opiate addict. These efforts almost always meet with failure because the most effective way to deal with an active opiate addict is often “counter-intuitive.”

Get out and exercise – spending 30-60 minutes walking or at the gym will just a few days a week will do wonders for you. Exercise will not only boost your physical strength, it will boost your mental health as well.

Don’t give up if an intervention fails the first time. Sometimes, an alcoholic simply isn’t ready to quit drinking. Staging an intervention, however, is a great way to let them know that you care about them and hope that they seek treatment.

Intervention. If education doesn’t help someone to recognize what they are doing to themselves by abusing alcohol, sometimes an intervention can make it more personal. Gathering together a group of concerned friends and family members to discuss the issue with a loved one abusing alcohol can help set them on the right track and assist them in making better decisions.

Read Away the Craving. Books can be buddies too! And when you are afraid of imposing on others like I am, they serve as wonderful reminders to stay on course. When I’m in a weak spot, especially with regard to addictive temptations, I place a book next to my addiction object: the Big Book (the Bible) goes next to the liquor cabinet; some 12-step pamphlet gets clipped to the freezer (home to frozen Kit Kats, Twix, and dark chocolate Hershey bars); and I’ll get out Melody Beattie before e-mailing an apology to someone who just screwed me over.

Catch the alcoholic off-guard, which will give him or her little time to come up with excuses or justifications for their drinking. Timing of an intervention may be best after their drinking has caused a serious problem in their life, since they may be more willing to listen at this time.

Be Selfish. It’s okay to be a little selfish. If you feel like you can’t be around this person, sober or otherwise, that’s okay. Let them know that you love them and want to help, but you can’t do that until they want to help themselves. It’s also okay to protect your valuables around an addict. Although it can feel rude to hide valuable things from someone you know and love, it’s more important that you feel safe.

Be patient. There’s no finish line in addiction recovery. It’s a life-long journey. Give yourself (and the people around you) the freedom to grow at your own pace so you don’t set yourself up for failure.

Believe in the power of tough love. By presenting the alcoholic with an ultimatum and putting a stop to your enabling behavior, you’re essentially forcing the alcoholic to make the right choice – the choice to quit drinking.

When in doubt, ask a therapist, rehab center or healthcare provider for an assessment to determine whether your drug use has become a problem.

The Magic Year. I didn’t like the cliché, “One day at a time.” I rewrote it. I concentrated on being clean for 12 months. Nothing else mattered; whatever happened daily was irrelevant. But how could I go 12 months? I tricked myself into trying it for 12 months, believing if I didn’t like how my life had turned around, I could always go back.

Choosing an exercise, offers the added bonus from a boost of endorphins, which will help to reduce the stress and anxiety you may be feeling. Practice mindful meditation to find a peaceful resolution. Visualize yourself going through the motions of your distraction to help you to get started. This will ease any anxiety and fear that can trigger cravings. Keep a positive attitude, and understand that with practice, healthy habits will override negative ones.

Communicate – addiction can be very isolating so talk to your friends and family about your challenges. While it may be tough, the support system you create will give you an enormous boost. They will be there when you need them and will help you stay motivated and focused.

Ask for Help. Education taught me that all humans are imperfect. I learned that it was the weak that do not ask for help. I highlighted my imperfections and asked for help in every aspect of my life.

Go to a 12-step meeting. There’s nothing like surrounding yourself with positive people who are also interested in staying clean and sober when you feel like getting high.

Do That. It’s enough work to take the time to discuss in detail what exactly is going to be expected of you by your family and friends, but now you have to actually follow through on it. You beat the habit of drinking or using drugs, and now is the time to change your other habits in terms of how you relate to people, how you handle your obligations, what you do for them and more. The people you spoke with may have been duly impressed that you were interested in what they thought and wanted to take their expectations into consideration, but what will really impress them, and help you cement stable relationships, is if you follow through on what you said you would do, now and in the long term.

Attitude Isn’t Everything. Just because you don’t want to go, it doesn’t mean that marijuana rehab won’t work for you.
